The U.S. Army Ordnance Training Support Facility at Fort Lee, Virginia, houses an impressive collection of historic military artifacts. From small pieces of military history to equipment weighing hundreds of pounds, preserving this collection requires storage that is secure, organized, accessible, and built for the job.
A few years ago, Spacesaver Storage Solutions was brought in to help create just that.
The collection presented an interesting challenge: some artifacts were small enough to fit neatly into 2" and 3" Spacesaver Viking Steel drawers, while others weighed as much as 400 pounds and required Spacesaver heavy-duty racking. Working with their Account Representative, Art Bykonen, the plan for a long island of 40 feet by about 4 feet wide of map cases with a solid surface top in the Arms Storage room was decided upon. That they could accommodate both ends of the spectrum while helping museum staff protect and organize these important pieces of military history.
After seeing the results of the initial project, the museum came back to Spacesaver with another challenge: How could they showcase more of their smaller artifacts while keeping them protected and organized?
Working with Spacesaver Storage Solutions Account Representative Art Bykonen, the team developed a distinctive solution for the Arms Storage room.
The centerpiece is an approximately 40-foot-long by 4-foot-wide island of map cases and flat files, topped with a durable solid surface. The expansive design provides substantial drawer storage for smaller artifacts while creating a clean, functional surface above.
