The need for efficient, accessible, and flexible storage within their Surgical Services Department encouraged a transformation from traditional wire racks to a more refined solution. Facing challenges of inefficient space utilization and disorganized storage impacting surgical procedures, the center reached out. Paul McGuire, Manager, Surgical Services, organized this initiative to optimize storage efficiency, streamline operations, and enhance accessibility within the medical facility.
The Need for Organized Storage
“We had been using wire racks to store items and people were having a difficult time working with them,” said Paul McGuire, Manager, Surgical Services. “They had a tendency to tear holes in supplies, and they didn’t provide a neat, organized appearance to the storage area.” McGuire said that these old wire carts were inefficient and did not utilize their space to the fullest potential. There was wasted space between and in front of carts, as well as empty space between shelves. It was difficult to store small instruments and when items were stacked high to better utilize shelf space, they were unmanageable.
Infrastructure for Enhanced Accessibility, Paul Leatherman of designed seven mobile systems that were incorporated into the OR core for storing sterile supplies, cases, and instruments for surgery. Two systems are located in the main core for supply items, two systems are located between the orthopedics surgery rooms for storing replacement parts and supplies, two service the neurosurgery suite, and one unit is in the heart core.
“Finding items quickly is critical. Three to four minutes is an eternity in an OR. If you cannot locate an item, it could have a major impact on a surgery,” McGuire said. “With the Spacesaver systems, the staff can now easily go in and get what they need, rather than searching the carts,” McGuire said.
“In the operating room you are moving very quickly from case to case. You don’t have time to find things and fumble your way through unorganized carts.” High-Density Mobile Storage systems position supplies where they're required for surgical procedures, optimizing accessibility and space efficiency within the facility.
High-density mobile solutions in healthcare revolutionize storage systems, particularly when users are constrained by limited space and financial resources. Overcrowded and disorganized storage areas within healthcare facilities pose serious issues, such as reduced efficiency, diminished staff morale, safety risks for employees, and an adverse impact on overall operational efficiency and patient care. Saving Time, Resources, and Lives With seven small Spacesaver mobile systems in place, the Surgical Services Department was able to upgrade their storage in the operating room core and replace more than 70 wire carts. “With the Spacesaver systems, the staff can now easily go in and get what they need, rather than searching the carts.” Paul McGuire | Manager, Surgical Services McGuire says that the space savings has allowed Peninsula Regional to store items in the core rather than in a central sterile supply area. “Now equipment and supplies are readily available and there is no waiting for an item during surgery,” he said.
With millions of dollars of OR supplies and instrumentation, it was also important to medical center staff to store supply items more safely and in a more organized fashion. According to McGuire, the Spacesaver systems have helped to “minimize disorder as well as clutter.” Implementing High-density mobile storage in healthcare facilities has addressed these challenges. This innovative system involves mounting shelving or cabinets onto a carriage and rail system, eliminating fixed aisles and optimizing storage space. Consequently, healthcare organizations can significantly increase their storage capacity or store the same volume of items within a reduced footprint. This transformation not only enhances storage efficiency but also liberates ample space for expanding essential healthcare services, ultimately fostering business growth and improved patient care. Spacesaver solutions offer accessibility, enabling easy grab-and-go access while maximizing space utilization, allowing all supplies to be housed in one location.
Storage Solved - The mobile systems incorporated drawers for small items such as soft goods, syringes, and catheters. Shelf openings were designed to maximize space, while still accommodating large items such as surgery cases, which are brought up each day for scheduled surgeries. The mobile system was designed with clear end panels so that items are easily visible and quickly located. Also, open slanted shelving was incorporated on the end of the large central core supply unit to store sutures. Our flexible High-Density Mobile systems integrate drawers and shelf configurations, improving space utilization to accommodate more supplies in-house, ensuring organization and access when needed.
The Spacesaver systems helped us organize, improved the overall appearance of our area, and made it extremely effective to do our job.”
