Transforming Libraries to Meet Evolving User Needs

Designing flexible, future-ready library spaces through smart storage and adaptable FF&E solutions.

What’s in the Presentation?
As the role of libraries continues to evolve, so must the environments that support them. Today’s libraries are becoming more open, flexible, and technology-enabled to better serve diverse community needs—from collaborative learning to digital access and beyond.

This course explores how architects and designers can overcome space constraints by integrating furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E) that minimize the footprint of book storage while maximizing space for people and programs. Participants will learn how mobile and modular FF&E can transform static environments into dynamic, user-centered spaces that support current demands and future growth.

This presentation qualifies for 1 AIA or IDCEC LU|HSW Credit.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand current trends and challenges in library design and how they impact space planning and programming.
  • Identify FF&E solutions that reduce the space required for traditional storage and increase flexibility for multipurpose use.
  • Learn how FF&E contributes to occupant wellness by incorporating safety features and integrated lighting into shelving and storage used in public settings.
  • Explore how storage strategies support adaptive reuse and sustainability goals, including contributions to LEED certification through space efficiency and environmental performance.
